    Building Momentum into 2017

Posted by Bill Miller on Sep 7, 2016 7:30:00 AM

Many people have asked me what Fiber Mountain has been up to this year. Here is a look at the key highlights of the year so far, and what’s in store as we prepare for 2017:

    2016 Recognition

First, we are very proud of the fact that we continue to be recognized as a provider of innovative data center solutions. In the first half of 2016, we have already earned awards for CrossCage Plus, the Glass Core automated cross-connect solution, and earned recognition from Gartner as a “Cool Vendor.”

Our 2016 awards and recognition include:

Network Infrastructure and Digital Transformation – News of the Week, 9-2-16

Posted by Anthea Strezze on Sep 2, 2016 11:01:49 AM

Digital Transformation. The concept isn’t new, but it’s gaining traction in the news I read because network infrastructure is at the core of any digital transformation initiative.

From data centers, to cloud services, to retail points of presence, the drive to take advantage of higher bandwidths, big data, deep learning, SDN and virtualization technologies is pushing companies to develop a wide range of ways to overcome the bottleneck of legacy network infrastructures.

Change is inevitable. How is your organization preparing for the new competitive landscape?

Data Center Forecast: Cloudy – News of the Week, 8/26/16

Posted by Anthea Strezze on Aug 26, 2016 2:20:44 PM

The first time I heard about cloud computing, I wondered why anyone would ever want to trust all of their data and systems to a remote infrastructure owned by someone else. These days, however, cloud providers have built up impressive data centers and an even more impressive reputation for reliability and convenience, whether you’re a consumer using Gmail and Dropbox, a tech startup using AWS or Azure, or a Fortune 500 company developing a hybrid cloud infrastructure customized to serve all your business needs with speed and efficiency.

This week’s articles all touch on that ongoing transition, from the old view of “why would anyone trust the cloud” to a new world where the cloud is just another option on the menu – and often a lower-risk option than building out your own data center!

25 Years of Internet: Then, Now, and Tomorrow – News of the Week, 8/19/16

Posted by Anthea Strezze on Aug 19, 2016 8:49:04 AM
(Edit: It has now been pointed out to me that the Internet and the World Wide Web are not the same thing, and that it is the latter which marks its 25th year this month. I'll leave the following text as it is, but for those of us who use the terms interchangeably, it's a good fact to become more aware of!)

The Internet has become so pervasive and essential that it can be easy to forget just how much it has changed the world. This month marks its 25th anniversary – which means that many younger technology professionals can’t even remember a world without email, websites and even social media! A quick Google search tells me that the first social networking site was SixDegrees.com, in 1997 – speaking of which, who remembers when AltaVista was THE Internet search portal?

But enough nostalgia! What about the Internet of today – and tomorrow? Take a look at the articles below for a few hints.

DOWN is a four-letter word - News of the Week, 8/12/16

Posted by Anthea Strezze on Aug 12, 2016 12:40:56 PM

One of my colleagues likes to say that “DOWN is a four-letter word.” Delta provided an object lesson of that concept earlier this week, only a month after a similar outage at Southwest Airlines. Ensuring uptime is a multifaceted challenge, including security against intentional threats, policies and procedures to prevent unintentional damage, redundancies to mitigate the impact of equipment failures or programming glitches and disaster recovery planning to get back up and running ASAP when something gets past all of your preventive measures.

Glass Core can be a part of the solution, but since this is my weekly news roundup, I’ll start with sharing a few relevant articles:

Enterprise, we've got Data Center Transformation - News of the Week, 7-1-16

Posted by Anthea Strezze on Jul 1, 2016 10:38:26 AM

This week, I’m pleased to share the Agile Digital Transformation Roadmap poster from Jason Bloomberg of Intellyx. Fiber Mountain is a sponsor, but I also love the way it ties in all the different elements and interdependencies that go into digital transformation, from DevOps to Enterprise Architecture to Customer Experience and APIs. Click here to download the full-sized PDF.

Moving on from Fiber Mountain news - I have three articles for you this week providing different views of data center transformation. Is the enterprise data center waning as hyperscales and public cloud ascend? Or will hybrid cloud – the optimization of combined cloud and private data center resources – lead to a new resurgence of enterprise-owned data centers? One thing is certain – the new generation of data center architectures, and components such as servers, are far more energy efficient than most of us realize yet.

Software-defined hits the real world - News of the Week, 6/17/16

Posted by Anthea Strezze on Jun 17, 2016 10:00:00 AM

SDN and the plethora of other Software-Defined solutions have been making news for quite some time, but in terms of real-world applications you're probably used to seeing them in test-labs or non-critical systems, if at all. That's changing, however, and fast! This week's articles reflect on the changing landscape of production data centers - and data center jobs.

You might have noticed a theme in these weekly news round-ups: I can’t get enough of news about the intersection of emerging technologies and practical applications in the network! This week, I have some excellent articles to share that tie together the concept of Digital Transformation of the enterprise with the infrastructure innovations necessary to support it.

Enterprise SDN, Cloud, Hybrid Networks - News of the Week, 5/27/16

Posted by Anthea Strezze on May 27, 2016 11:00:00 AM

Last week, our news roundup looked to the far future, examining developments in the physics of light and technology of fiber optics, advances that will start to bear fruit in the next couple of decades.

This week, I’m bringing the focus back to the present, starting with a new study out from Viavi Solutions on the “State of the Network” based on responses from 740 enterprise network professionals. Keeping to the enterprise theme, check out what Arthur Cole has to say about the maturity of virtualization, and Jeremy Rossbach’s advice on how to keep SDN from “going bump in the night.”
