Is the Future of Data Centers Software Defined, Underwater & Voice Controlled? - News of the Week, 2/24/17

Posted by Anthea Strezze on Feb 24, 2017 6:57:00 AM

Happy Friday! I'll start with our own news: this week, Fiber Mountain published a Cisco-approved press release on the LS-2520 QSFP breakout solution for their NCS 1002 unit. Sushin Suresan (Cisco Product Manager) says "The Fiber Mountain team has created the a great companion to the NCS 1002 that simplifies operations for break-out applications and Cisco is enthusiastic about early customer feedback."

Moving on to industry news, is it just me, or is everyone looking at the future of data center design lately? Read on for more on SDDC, the latest from Microsoft's Project Natick team, and the potential for voice-controlled data center provisioning. (Alexa, I'd like a new VM!)

NFV or SDNF? News of the Week - 1/27/17

Posted by Anthea Strezze on Jan 27, 2017 6:39:00 AM

Almost a year ago, Bill Miller posted here wondering whether the term “SDN” would endure the way “Ethernet” has, or fade into background invisibility like Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM). At the time, it seemed that the term NFV was both more clearly defined and more generally accepted than SDN, but the first article in this week’s roundup actually suggests phasing it out, in favor of a new acronym: SDNF.

Whether the “V” loses its top billing or not, though, it’s a sure bet that virtualization will continue to play a major role in our evolving technology landscape!

Reality, Virtual and Otherwise - News of the Week, 1/13/17

Posted by Anthea Strezze on Jan 13, 2017 7:15:00 AM

Towards the end of every week, I open up all of the articles we’ve shared on social media recently to look for interesting themes and through-lines to share with you in the weekly roundup. This week, the one that jumped out at me was the potential for virtual and augmented reality to finally start hitting the mainstream – and what that’s going to mean for our network infrastructures.

The Infrastructure of Digital Transformation - News of the Week, 11/4/16

Posted by Anthea Strezze on Nov 4, 2016 11:14:10 AM

Digital transformation – it’s a topic I keep coming back to, because of how wide-ranging the scope is, in terms of both the impact and options involved. This week's news included a variety of articles discussing the ways in which infrastructure has to change in order to support the changes to processes and services. Infrastructure may not seem exciting, but as this week's articles show, it's an essential component of successful digital transformation.

Several of the articles that caught my eye were from the Brocade team, but for variety’s sake I’m bundling them under the first featured article below. Enjoy, and let me know what you think of the transformation of IT infrastructure in the comments section!

The Webscale Way – News of the Week, 10/28/16

Posted by Anthea Strezze on Oct 28, 2016 8:27:00 AM

Webscale companies like Google and Netflix excel at finding ways to redesign processes and networks to take advantage of their massive scale and specialized needs. They’re inspiring, but their solutions don’t translate directly to the needs – and capabilities – of enterprise organizations.

At the same time, enterprise needs to innovate and embrace digital transformation to remain competitive, so what’s a CIO to do? This week’s articles provide a few different angles on the problem, and on possible solutions.

    10 Trends & 5 Myths – News of the Week, 10/21/16

Posted by Anthea Strezze on Oct 21, 2016 7:00:00 AM

Number headlines are all the rage these days, right? Normally, I’d ignore fashion, but I happen to have two fun “number” articles in this week’s industry news, so why not!

First up, I’ve been enjoying the news out of the Gartner Symposium ITxpo 2016 in Florida, including their “10 Big Trends that will Change how IT Operates.” Of course, one of the big trends that I’ve been following for some time is Digital Transformation. That may be why the article below about “5 Myths” initially caught my eye, but it also serves as an interesting reflection on how business will cope with the trends observed by Gartner.

Software-Defined Ethernet, Networks and… News? – News of the Week, 10/14/16

Posted by Anthea Strezze on Oct 14, 2016 8:14:00 AM

    Happy Friday!

This week, I was caught off guard by a lovely little object lesson in the pervasiveness of digital transformation - as you'll see in the first article below. Software is transforming our world in ways that were only science fiction a decade ago, and in practical ways that science fiction never addressed. It’s not just software, either. Hardware has to evolve to support SDx, and the ever-increasing speeds, bandwidths and flexibility that our networks need to deliver!

Architecting Transformation – News of the Week, 10/7/16

Posted by Anthea Strezze on Oct 7, 2016 8:45:42 AM

Hyperscale data centers, digital transformation, Cloud, IoT, SDN… how do you tie it all together and make it work for your organization? That’s an ongoing discussion in the tech media, and one with at least as many answers as there are writers!

This week’s roundup takes a look at a few of them, from how to “right-size” a data center, to a collection of four different digital transformation journeys.

Arts & Energy: Taking a Different Look at Hyperscale Infrastructure – News of the Week, 9/30/16

Posted by Anthea Strezze on Sep 30, 2016 12:55:21 PM

Whether you call them hyperscale or webscale, Apple, Facebook, Google and Microsoft are global powerhouses, each with massive data centers pushing the cutting edge of network technology. Generally, I focus on the innovative designs of the data centers themselves, or the technology innovations within, but this week I found a few articles looking at these facilities from less familiar - and in some cases more beautiful - angles.

Read on for more detail, and let me know what you think in the comments below.

From Cattle to Data Centers – IoT and the News of the Week, 9/23/16

Posted by Anthea Strezze on Sep 23, 2016 8:10:00 AM

What’s the least likely industry you can think of to be shaken up by digital transformation?

It’s a difficult question to answer, because by definition those are the industries you just don’t think of in the same mental space as technological innovation. Consider cattle ranching and the Internet of Things (IoT). Combining the two is laughable at first – and then delightful when you see how it can really work!

The lesson I see here is that digital disruption is not going to pass anyone by. Change is coming to every industry vertical, in every part of the world, and probably sooner than we expect. It’s up to us to embrace the potential opened up by new applications of technology.
