dreamstime_20705139_edit.jpgCloud computing is all the rage, but colocation data center demand is also on the rise. Just like enterprise data centers, they face the challenges caused by increasing demands for computation and bandwidth. Unlike enterprise-owned data centers, however, colocation providers thrive on building out new space! Still, tenant concerns about costs and reliability are driving new alliances and standards, which add a few challenges of their own.

CBRE: Demand for Colocation Space in London Holds Firm in Face of Brexit

ComputerWeekly.com | When the Brexit vote first came through, there was quite a bit of speculation about what it would mean for the booming colocation data center industry. Would international companies start moving out over concerns regarding data sovereignty and other compliance issues? Caroline Donnelly reports that – so far, at least – demand for data center space in London shows no signs of dropping off. It will be interesting to see if that trend continues over the next two years of negotiations between the UK and the EU!

Equinix First Member of CommScope’s New Colocation Data Center Alliance

Data Center Knowledge |With demand for colocation space booming, Karen Riccio reports that CommScope is forming the Multi-Tenant Data Center Alliance to help standardize customer solutions. They’re off to a great start! Their first partner is Equinix, the largest retail colocation data center provider in the world.

Switch Announces its New Tier 5 Data Center Standard

North Nevada Business Weekly | While Equinix is the biggest, Switch has the most beautiful colocation data center - and they’re pushing the envelope in terms of standards too. The only colocation provider to accomplish the Uptime Institute’s Tier IV Gold certification twice, they’re now pushing the envelope with a new proprietary Tier 5 Data Center Standard of their own. As the article explains, the original standards were developed for enterprise data centers, but Tier 5 takes into account more of the factors colocation customers need insight into when evaluating providers and their data centers.

Before I sign off for the day, I’d like to invite everyone attending the Cisco Live! conference in Las Vegas later this month to visit us in booth #423. (We’ll be right next to the Technical Solutions Clinic and across from the Cloud/Data Center Village.) If you use Cisco’s NCS 1002, you’ll want to take a look at our LS-2520 QSFP breakout panel – and stay to see how our other solutions can integrate with your Cisco components and simplify your network!
